Emotional Liability

Image
A friend of mine at church approached me a few days ago in order to gain some perspective concerning her son. He is an adult, married with children, who has been through a major physical trauma that almost cost him his life. His recovery process has been lengthy and challenging, but he continues to make progress and regain the use of his body. The circumstances of his trauma are quite different than mine (illness rather than accident), but the process of surgery and recovery is similar. This friend of mine asked me if I was more "emotional" after the motorcycle accident as I faced the long period of recovery. I have never spoken to anyone about this, so I hesitated for a slight moment and then answered her honestly with a "yes". I knew that I couldn't withhold this aspect of my recovery from her because she was very much worried about her son's condition. He had told her about the things that he is experiencing with his emotions, and she was quite worried a...

How Can This Be?

Today I went to the church property for a while in order to get a few things done. As I was trimming a couple of trees that were beginning to grow into the dumpster area, I realized that several of the branches were too high for me to reach. I then pushed the dumpster closer to them and used it to climb up on a wall that encloses the space. As I stood on the wall trimming a few branches I briefly considered the fact that I had just climbed onto a dumpster and then jumped onto a wall. I finished the work and climbed down without killing myself, so yay.  In contrast, I'm home now and ten minutes ago I limped when I first stood up because I had been sitting too long. I also had a hard time using my hand because I held my cellphone in one position too long while looking at some photos. I mean, really? I sometimes have a hard time believing the things that I go through. I'm Joe Athlete one minute, and Myron Invalid the next. None of it makes sense to me. I feel like an enigma wra...

Dullsville

I had an appointment today with a new surgeon concerning my latest hernia. I liked him and I’m certain that he will do a good job with the upcoming procedure. I was asked to bring a copy of the original medical records concerning the things done to me in the hospital five years ago. He kept reading through them during my visit and commented that I really shouldn’t have made it. I already knew this. He also asked me if I still ride. Yeah, that’s definitely a question that feels like it’s past its prime. I was then sent to a very nice lady in his office who sets up the surgery dates and any details necessary to get things ready. She had read through my medical records and commented that I shouldn’t have made it. I already knew this. Everything is lining up for a surgery toward the end of May, and I hope that on that day nobody feels compelled to tell me what I already know or ask me what I’ve already answered. It kind of grows a little tiresome.

Good Day, Long Moments

Odd thoughts today. First, I had someone picking my brain at length concerning diabetes. He also shared some of his thoughts on it all. I have to be honest in saying that I grow tired of conversing about diabetes. I write about it here because this blog allows me the opportunity to talk about things related to my accident injuries on my terms. I can say what I want to say and then be done with it. Conversations with others, however, grow tiresome. I get sick of having my life be about being sick. Does that make sense? Second, I had someone at church who is an RN tell me that he had a conversation with another medical professional about my ruptured aorta. Apparently the two of them discussed it to some length and concluded that I should be dead. He spoke about it very passionately, as though he wanted to make certain that I understood the severity of it all. He went on to describe to me exactly what happens inside of someone’s body when they suffer a ruptured aorta near the heart. In es...
