I Hate Eating Healthy
A few years ago I discovered that I was given diabetes as a late gift from my motorcycle accident injuries. The symptoms became fairly intense after roughly two years, and I finally went to see an endocrinologist who placed me on insulin and medication immediately. My initial A1C was a dangerous 14.2 during that first visit, but I’ve since brought it down to very good levels. I only take metformin now and I control things otherwise through proper diet and exercise. Kudos to me, I guess.
I’ve got to be honest in stating that I really hate being diabetic. It’s a disease that controls your life and shows no mercy when left unchecked. It’s particularly irritating to consider that it came about as the result of damage done to my pancreas during the accident. It just serves to highlight the vicious nature of my accident injuries and helps to remind me daily of the damage done to my body. I get tired of having to watch my diet and exercise, but I particularly grow tired of the eating. Before the accident, I ate with absolute disregard of the need for discipline or sanity. Dessert for breakfast? No problemo. Skip a meal in order to make room for something huge later? Ayup. Have an entire day’s food intake consist of factory made junk food? In like Flynn.
I’m sharing all of this because baseball season starts in a few weeks. I always celebrated the opening day game for the Red Sox by eating what amounts to be culinary garbage throughout the entire game. I could give you a list of what I would like to eat during the first game in a few weeks, were I not a diabetic, but talking about it would only serve to hurt me worse. Instead, I’ll behave and watch the game while drinking a glass of water and dutifully waiting for an evening meal consisting of healthy, diabetes appropriate food. It stinks, and I’m tired of it all, but I know that it will help me to survive long enough to see the Sox make it past what promises to be a pretty mediocre season. Maybe the Red Sox will have a better 2021 season and a cure for diabetes will be found in time for opening day next year…
